Keith Leonard

Keith Leonard   |   President and Chief Executive Officer

Keith Leonard, a co-founder of Kythera, and President and Chief Executive Officer, is directing the newly formed management team and leveraging the experience of the board of directors.

Formerly, as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Amgen Europe, Keith was responsible for all commercial operations in 28 countries. During his tenure in Europe he built a team that took the company's products to market leadership in oncology and nephrology, and dramatically expanded the company's operations, in just three years. Prior to that experience, his career at Amgen included establishing Amgen's presence in rheumatology with the creation of the Rheumatology Business Unit, Head of Information Management, and leadership roles in Sales and Marketing, Engineering, Operations, and Finance. Keith is also a board member of ARYx Therapeutics.

Keith holds a BS in Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); a BA in History from the University of Maryland; an MS in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; and an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA.

Deepak Chadha   |   Vice President, Regulatory Affairs

Deepak Chadha, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, is leading Kythera’s regulatory submissions and overseeing regulatory projects covering Kythera’s expansive product pipeline. Deepak brings to Kythera more than 13 years of experience in regulatory submissions and projects for drugs, biologics, medical devices and combination products. His most recent role was Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs at Allergan Medical (formerly know as Inamed Corporation), where he helped build the Global Regulatory Affairs Department and was responsible for developing and implementing global regulatory strategies. Deepak led the group to successful submission and approval of aesthetic products in the U.S. and overseas. Prior to Allergan, Deepak held positions of increasing responsibility at Biomeasure Inc. (Ipsen) and Stryker Biotech in Massachusetts. At Biomeasure Inc., he oversaw the U.S. regulatory activities of Ipsen’s Botulinum Toxin Type-A development program for the aesthetic indication. His regulatory experience encompasses preparation and successful submission of clinical and marketing applications to the FDA, the EMEA, as well as the regulatory agencies of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Japan among others.

Deepak holds a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Berhampur University in Orissa, India, an MS in Pharmaceutics from Hamdard University in New Delhi, India, and an MBA in International Business from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Nathaniel "Ned" David, PhD

Nathaniel "Ned" David, Phd   |   Chief Science Officer

Nathaniel "Ned" David, PhD, co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Kythera, looks for unexpected ways to take biological insights and marry them with unmet needs in aesthetic medicine. As the co-founder of Syrrx (acquired by Takeda for $270 million in 2005) and Achaogen, he has experience creating and growing innovative biotechnology companies. Ned was named one of the Top 100 innovators in the world under 35 (2002) by the MIT Technology Review.

Ned holds numerous pending and issued patents in fields such as nanovolume crystallography, antibiotic resistance, energy production, and aesthetic medicine. He sits on the board of trustees of the UC Foundation and on the board of directors of Sapphire Energy, a next-generation bioenergy company producing liquid transportation fuels that are 100% compatible with the existing energy infrastructure. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley in Molecular and Cellular Biology and an AB in Biology from Harvard College.

Amit Munshi   |   Chief Business Officer

Amit Munshi, a co-founder of Kythera and Chief Business Officer, is working diligently to fill the pipeline and help shape the development of current products.

Prior to joining the Kythera management team, Amit was General Manager of Amgen's European Nephrology Business, with responsibility for the company's lead product for anemia management, Aranesp®. In his 8-year tenure at Amgen his product experience included the launches of Aranesp and Sensipar® in Europe, the relaunch plan for Enbrel, and the launch of Kineret® in the United States. His marketing team's design of SimpleJect™ for Kineret won many awards including the R&D Magazine 100 award and the 2002 Medical Design Excellence Award[2].

His prior experience includes sales and marketing, and business development roles at both Astra Merck and Johnson & Johnson launching or working on important brands including Livostin® and Prilosec.

Amit has a BA in History and a BS in Econometrics from University of California, Riverside. He also has an MBA from the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.

John Smither

John Smither   |   Chief Financial Officer

John Smither, Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for all financial and administrative aspects of the company including financing, business planning and budgeting, tax and accounting and treasury. Smither brings to Kythera more than 30 years of experience in finance and accounting. Most recently, he spent more than 9 years at Amgen, Inc. where he advanced rapidly through financial management positions for business units and subsidiaries based in Europe and the US. During his term as Chief Financial Officer of Amgen Europe, Smither directed financial planning, accounting, cost accounting, treasury, cash management and financial reporting under U.S. GAAP in 25 European countries. Other roles at Amgen included Head of Internal Audit and Executive Director of Corporate Accounting at Amgen where he was responsible for accounting operations including the selection and implementation planning of SAP’s business enterprise software. Prior to Amgen, Smither was an audit partner at Ernst & Young in Los Angeles, the Chief Financial Officer of several early stage industrial companies and a former member of the Board of Directors of Dompe Biotec S.p.A.

Smither holds a BS in Accounting from California State University at Los Angeles. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA) and Financial Executives International (FEI).

Patricia Walker, MD, PhD   |   Chief Medical Officer

Patty Walker, Chief Medical Officer, leads Kythera's clinical programs as the company continues its pursuit of novel therapeutics. Prior to joining Kythera, Patty was Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer responsible for research, development and regulatory affairs at Allergan Medical (formerly known as Inamed Corporation). Prior to joining Inamed, Patty was Vice President, Clinical Research and Development for skin care pharmaceuticals at Allergan, Inc. Over the past 10 years, Patty has led key product approvals in dermatology and aesthetic medicine including the development and approval of Tazorac®, BOTOX® Cosmetic, Hylaform®, Captique®, Juvederm, Bioenterics® LAP-BAND® and Inamed® Silicone gel-filled Breast Implants[1].

Patty earned her MD/PhD (Physiology and Biophysics) at the University of Iowa. Following her degrees she completed a residency in Dermatology and a research fellowship in the Dermatology Branch, National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health (NIH). Patty is a board certified Dermatologist.

Jeff Webster

Jeff Webster   |   Vice President, Product Development and Operations

Jeff Webster, Vice President, Product Development and Operations, is responsible for Kythera's Product Teams (PTs), which guide product development from late preclinical through commercialization, as well as Manufacturing and Quality for clinical and commercial supply.

Jeff, a 19-year Amgen veteran, has held positions of increasing responsibility in process development, engineering, investor relations, European marketing, product development, portfolio management, corporate development and strategy, and operations. As the product development team leader for NEUPOGEN®/NEULASTA®[2], Webster oversaw multiple regulatory filings in US, Europe, Canada and Australia and led efforts to expand the clinical and commercial footprint of this important medicine. In his most recent position as Vice President, Operations Planning at Amgen, Webster led an 85-person group in product development, project management, training and development, and strategy functions within the Operations function.

Webster holds a Masters in Business Administration from San Jose State University and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley.

Keith Klein   |   General Counsel

Keith Klein, General Counsel, is responsible for all legal aspects of Kythera's business. Prior to joining Kythera, Keith spent more than 15 years in Amgen's law department where he ultimately served as senior associate general counsel, responsible for legal activities relating to the areas of sales and marketing, federal government affairs, corporate relationships, manufacturing, product supply and product development. Before Amgen, Keith was a corporate associate at Cooley Godward Castro Huddleson & Tatum, where he advised companies on protection of trade secrets, intellectual property rights, negotiation of technology licenses and transfers, and represented both issuers and investors in public offerings, mergers and acquisitions.

Keith holds a law degree with honors from University of California, Davis and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from University of California, Los Angeles
